Where this comes from. Every AmLaw 200 firm's website is read the same way every night. When a lawyer's page comes down and the address is confirmed gone, that is a seat that opened. No firm is asked, and no job board is involved — which is why the count does not depend on who advertises.

What it is not. A seat opening is not a firm hiring. Some are backfilled, some are absorbed, some are a retirement. It is the population of places where the work moved, which is the honest thing to measure and a different thing from a vacancy.
