There are 2,028 in-house counsel roles open in the United States right now. Not listings — roles. The same job posted in four cities is one job, and law firm seats are not counted at all. This is the corporate side only.
Litigation leads every practice with 503 open roles. New York leads every market with 246. Neither of those is the interesting number.
The interesting number is the intersection
Knowing there are 353 corporate roles nationally does not help a lawyer in Chicago. Knowing there are 267 real estate roles does not help one in Boston. What a lawyer actually wants is their practice in their city, and that is the number nobody publishes.
So we published it. 7 practices by 14 markets, every cell counted from last night's board. Corporate and M&A in New York: 31. Real estate in New York: 41. The whole grid is on the page.
What an empty cell means
Most cells in that grid are empty, and an empty cell is not the same as none. It means we counted fewer than 10 roles, and we do not publish a cell that small — at that size a count can identify the employer. 90 cells are withheld on that basis between them holding 318 real, open roles.
Regulatory, Tax, Privacy & Data had no cell anywhere above the line, so they are not in the table at all. That is not a market with no work in it. It is a market too thinly spread to publish safely.

Why every figure is a floor
3,136 listings de-duplicated down to 2,450 roles. 422 law firm roles removed. Of what is left, only the roles naming a practice in the title can sit in a cell at all. Every number we publish is therefore the smallest the true figure could be, and never an estimate of it.
- The whole board is re-counted after midnight, so every figure changes nightly.
